Even the best-built mattress needs a little upkeep to hit its full lifespan. None of this takes long, and most of it takes no special products at all.
Daily habits
Pull your bedding back for 20–30 minutes each morning instead of making the bed immediately — it lets overnight moisture evaporate rather than getting trapped against the mattress. Opening a window for a few minutes helps too.
Weekly
Vacuum the surface with an upholstery attachment, paying particular attention to seams and edges where dust collects. It's also a good moment to check for any stains that need treating before they set.
Monthly
Rotate the mattress 180 degrees so wear is distributed evenly rather than concentrating in one sleeping area. While you're at it, check for early signs of sagging, odours, or moisture.
Seasonal deep clean
- Strip all bedding completely
- Vacuum thoroughly, including the sides
- Treat any visible stains
- Sprinkle baking soda across the surface and leave for a few hours to deodorise, then vacuum it off
- Air the mattress in sunlight if you have the space to do so
Stain removal, by type
- General stains — cold water with a little mild detergent, applied lightly with a spray bottle
- Blood — hydrogen peroxide mixed with cold water
- Sweat / yellowing — a vinegar-water mix, followed by baking soda once dry
Protecting your investment
A waterproof, breathable mattress protector is the single easiest way to extend a mattress's life — wash it monthly. Try to keep bedroom humidity in the 30–50% range, and use natural-fibre bedding washed weekly.
Common mistakes to avoid
Over-wetting the mattress while cleaning, using harsh chemical cleaners, forgetting to clean the bed frame itself, and skipping rotation entirely are the most common ways a good mattress ages faster than it should.
