If your partner's 3am toss-and-turn regularly wakes you up, the mattress is very likely part of the problem. Here's what motion isolation actually means, and how to test for it before you buy.
What motion isolation is
It's a mattress's ability to absorb movement at the point of impact rather than letting it ripple across the surface. The opposite — motion transfer — is what makes a mattress feel like a trampoline every time your partner shifts position.
Why it actually matters
Adults move through four to six sleep cycles a night, and deep sleep is where physical recovery happens. Repeated small disturbances — even ones you don't consciously remember the next morning — fragment those cycles and add up to real daytime fatigue, poorer concentration, and a shorter fuse.
Three ways to test it before you buy
- The glass of water test — place a full glass on the mattress and have someone shift their weight nearby. Rippling water means poor isolation.
- The partner test — lie on opposite sides of the mattress in-store and have one person move around while the other pays attention to how much they feel it.
- The coin test — stand a coin on its edge; if it topples easily when someone else moves on the bed, motion transfer is significant.
How different materials compare
| Material | Isolation |
|---|---|
| Memory foam | Excellent |
| HR foam | Very good |
| Latex | Good |
| Individually wrapped pocket springs | Good |
| Connected coil / open-spring systems | Poor |
The trade-off to know about
Materials with the best motion isolation (dense memory foam especially) tend to have less bounce and can feel harder to reposition on. Hybrid builds like Luma, which combine individually wrapped pocket springs with foam layering, are usually the better middle ground for couples who want both bounce and decent isolation, without the connected-coil transfer of older spring designs.
Who should prioritise this
Couples on different sleep schedules, light sleepers, anyone sharing a bed with a restless partner, and pet owners who let animals share the bed.
