India's mattress market is growing fast, and with that growth has come a lot more material choice than a decade ago. Here's a straightforward walk-through of the main types available, and who each one actually suits.
Memory foam
A viscoelastic foam that softens under body heat and slowly moulds around your shape. Excellent pressure relief and motion isolation, making it a strong choice for side sleepers and couples. The trade-off is heat retention in warm rooms, which is why newer open-cell and gel-infused versions exist specifically for Indian conditions.
Latex
Naturally bouncy and breathable, with a much faster response than memory foam — press down and it springs back immediately rather than slowly. Naturally hypoallergenic and long-lasting, though it commands a higher price than foam alternatives. Good for hot sleepers and anyone who dislikes the "sinking" feeling of memory foam.
HR (High Resilience) foam
A firmer, more open-cell foam that bounces back instantly rather than slowly conforming. Breathes well, holds up for years under sustained weight, and costs less than latex — which is why it's such a common support-core material in Indian mattresses, including the base of Resto and Sova.
Spring / hybrid
Individually wrapped coils under a comfort layer give a springier, more traditional "hotel bed" feel with good airflow. Luma uses exactly this kind of hybrid pocket-spring construction to add bounce that pure foam mattresses can't replicate.
Coir
Made from coconut husk fibre, rubberised and usually layered with foam on top. Very firm, breathable, and eco-friendly — a traditional Indian choice, best suited to back and stomach sleepers who want maximum firmness and minimal give.
Matching material to how you sleep
- Side sleeper → memory foam or plush latex
- Back sleeper → HR foam or a pocket-spring hybrid
- Stomach sleeper → coir or firm HR foam
- Hot sleeper → latex, HR foam, or a hybrid spring build
- Couples → memory foam or pocket springs, for motion isolation
A quick maintenance note
Whatever material you choose, a waterproof protector, a rotation every three to six months, and airing the mattress out during monsoon season will noticeably extend its life.
